Firearms

Firearms
The earliest gunpowder device, as distinct from naphtha-based pyrotechnics, introduced in India from China during the sec-ond half of the 13th century, was a rocket called hawai (later named ban). From the second half of the 14th century, this rocket came to be used as a weapon of war. The use of gunpowder artillery of a primi-tive type is roughly dateable from 1440, while similar handguns came only toward the end of the 15th century. European and Ottoman cannons and muskets came to India with the Portuguese (1498) and Babur (1526). See also KAMAN-I RA'D; ROCKET.
